dhoop originated out of curiosity, wonder, and the privilege of building a space to have conversations around nature, culture, sustainability, and design in the world of food. We understand the weight of the worlds we attempt to unpack. What does sustainability even mean, right? The hope is to converse, engage, and remain open to not knowing (always learning).
In the first issue of Dhoop, we looked at ‘dhoop’, a.k.a sunlight. Through multiple contributions, we discovered the endless summer of Chennai, the fragrant khus (vetiver)- lined coolers, the advent and demise of solar cookers , and the joys of gulkand, Vitamin D, and colors.
The response to the first issue prompted us to release the second issue, focusing on the act of eating together; it revolved around the absence/presence of commensality. We got 50+ thought-provoking pitches, of which 16 made it to the magazine. What’s almost unbelievable is that…
Issue #2 sold over 250 copies
Some of our favorite bookstores and cafes stock the magazine:
The Farm Chennai, Chennai
We received a lot of love from Goya Journal and Homegrown, too, and we couldn’t be more thankful to you for being a part of the first few people who showed love to our magazine.
As you already know, we are an independently published magazine, so producing and selling the print versions of the magazine is the only way to share our work. However, through this series of ‘Some dhoop for you!’ newsletters, we want to come to your inbox and share some insightful, fun, and meandering thoughts on the discourse around the different elements that make dhoop.
Why should you subscribe to this newsletter?
Through this bimonthly NL, we will come to your inbox only twice a month to share stories, interviews, and learnings about food and its relationship with culture, sustainability, design, and nature.
To foster a space to engage in a dialogue - we want this newsletter to provide a space for discussion. We want to tell and listen.
As a free subscriber, you will get a Sunday dhoop newsletter.
As a paid subscriber, you get access to all of Dhoop’s archives, two monthly newsletters, first access to future events/clubs, a curated reading list, and miscellaneous food-related stuff.
Are you ready?
It will be fun, I promise.
Until next Sunday,
Rini Singhi
